Synagogue

General

Type d'unité:

Probably founded in the mid-17th century, although some date back its emergence to early 18th century.

It is a single nave structure, built of hewn stone and brick. Severely damaged during World War II. It has been completely restored in 1960-1963.

The interior has not been preserved. On the eastern wall, there is an altar, which is a simplified copy of the altar of the Golden Rose Synagogue in Lviv. In the wall, there is an altar cupboard Aron Kodesh, which kept Five Books of Moses - the Torah, handwritten on parchment.

The external facade of the west wall holds the image of the tables of Moses, and below, within the frame, a Hebrew inscription that is a quote from the Bible: “How dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of God”. At the southwest corner of the synagogue, there is a round tower, which served as a prison for Jews. The upper part housed a civilian prison, and the bottom part, in a dungeon under the tower, a criminal prison. Currently, the main part of the building houses an exhibition hall of the Gallery of Bieszczady Cultural Centre in Lesko, which in the summer presents the works of amateur artists from all over the region.
