The cemetery in Leżajsk was probably established in the 18th century.

During World War II the cemetery was badly damaged; only a few of the original gravestones survived. In later years, the cemetery was restored and tombstones were recovered. The Ohel protecting the tomb of Elimelech Lippman (called Elimelech of Leżajsk) was also restored. The Ohel consists of three parts: one is the tomb of Elimelech of Leżajsk and epitaphs of some members of his family, the other two parts are separate prayer rooms - for men and women. The original gravestone of Elimelech leaning against the wall was found after the war in the city.
