Nowadays the wild parts of the forest can only be admired in inaccessible places, situated far from roads and settlements. The forests of Knyszyńska Forest are one of the few areas in Poland that show primeval natural features.

The Taboły Nature Reserve was founded in 1999, it covers 307.89 ha and protects low and transitional peat bogs, on which we find mostly coniferous forests communities (meadow bog forests and spruce and peat moss forests) and marshy brichwood forest communities of a highly pure and natural environment.

The community most opulent in terms of plant species within the reserve is the mixed pine birch marshy forest often referred to as “biel” - “the White”. It is inhabited by over 70 plant species, which includes nearly 30% of moss and peat moss species. “The White” takes up large spaces in the Northern part of the Reserve, it grows on over two metres high peats.

It is a good habitat for a large group of small mammals. But there are also large animals, such as: elk, deer, boar, roe deer, less often a wolf or a lynx. The most interesting among birds are species typical for the taiga: spotted nutcracker, bullfinch, red crossbill, the Eurasian three-toed woodpecker, white-backed woodpecker and boreal owl.
