Underground Educational Tourist Route in the Old Uranium Mine in Kletno

The beginnings of mining in the Snieznik Massif can be traced back to the mid 14th century. Since that time, there have been mining operations conducted periodically in the Klesnica Valley for iron ore, silver, fluorite, copper, uranium and marble has been mined.

FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
In 1947, Soviet experts began searching for uranium ore in Poland and in the years between 1948 and 1953 built the mine “Kopaliny” whose excavations were about 37km long. The decreasing amount of uranium that was being extracted led to the closure of the mine and the deposits being declared as exhausted. In the years between 1953 and 1958 the operation to extract fluorite was conducted at the mine, which is used as a flux in industry. In 2002, after two years of adaptive work, the uppermost sections of the excavation were released for viewing by the public. The tourist trail is routed through Exploration Adit No. 18, where all deposits of uranium ore have been removed. This ensures the complete safety of visitors from radiation. The route can be visited safely to admire the magnificent deposits of numerous minerals along its walls such as fluorite, amethyst, hematite, magnetite, quartz, and chrysocolla as well as the prepared exhibits.
