The Grotto in Zielona Gora

The Zielona Gora Nature Reserve created close to the village Kusieta in 1953 includes limestone hills covered in deciduous forested and rocky scrub vegetation which conceal amongst its range an interesting cave rich in formations.

FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
The top of the hill is crowned with huge inselbergs made from Late Jurassic limestone rock. The old name of this hill is Gola Skala (Bare Rock), which suggests a lack of vegetation on it. Currently, the whole hill is covered mainly with deciduous trees.
In these inselbergs, close to a trail, there is a cave. Access to the interior is through a wide but low-ceilinged opening which leads to the first chamber which contains a large number of dripstone columns and flowstones adorning the walls. Due to the fact that these formations are made from fine crystalline calcite, this cave did not share the same fate of other caverns in the region, which were destroyed by calcite hunters called “szpaciarze”. The cave is located in the Zielona Gora Nature Reserve.
