FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
Lomza, as the capital of the province and an important crossing point of the River Narew, became a separate fortress, whose task was the defence, along with other fortresses in Warsaw, Modlin and Osowiec, the western border of the Tsarist Empire. It consisted of five forts, whose construction was started in 1889. The first built was Fort IV followed shortly by Fort V on the left bank of the River Narew as earth and wood strongholds. Subsequently the Forts I, II and III were built around Piatnica, on the right bank of the river, as concrete strongholds. The radius of the entire Lomza Fortress was about 3km. The forty were prepared to defend in a circle, in case of being cut off from supplies. They had their own kitchens, bakeries, water supply and heating. Whilst visiting the structure, it is possible to acquaint yourself both with the upper part of the fort and also move on to the forward bunkers, which defended the moat, through concrete lined underground tunnels. It is also worth visiting a small exhibition at the Fortress Museum in one of the emergency shelters. Apart from the sightseeing we can offer history lovers the opportunity of shooting historical weapons like the Mauser 98K, the Mosin wz1891/30, the PPSz41 and the TT to name but a few. The terrain around the fort is a conservation area.
