The Old Market in Zielona Góra

The Market has formed the central point of the city since the 13th century to this day. The colorfull old houses are admired by the touristst.

The Market  has through the centuries been the main place of trade, through which also runs the main communication route. Before the 1960s when wheeled traffic was excluded from the Old City, on the Market there was a rank of horse drawn cabs, and later taxis and buses. Houses around the Market, built on medieval plots are mainly from the 19th century . A wealth of artistic detail distinguishes the “Under the Owl” apartment house . The Town Hall , in its main part, with the 54 metre tall tower, was built in the 15th century, which is revealed under the plaster recess on the facade. Rebuilt after fires in 1582, 1627 and 1651, it gained its current Classical form as a result of enlargement in 1801. Only the tower retains its Gothic – Baroque character, crowned with a slender dome, slightly leant, resulting from risky changes to the structural elements of its base in 1801. In the basement of the town hall there is a nice pub called "Bachus" (God of Wine). It is worth to visit that place.
