Underground Tourist Route in Sandomierz

The undergrounds in Sandomierz have a tradition as old as the city. They probably were created in the 14th century to serve as warehouses and merchants' stores.

FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
With the increasing demand for storage space for commercial products within the tight confines of the city resulted in the individual traders excavating more new cellars and combining them with existing ones, which over the centuries led to a substantial underground labyrinth. When the city fell into decline, the unused and unrepaired cellars become a threat to its safety. Urban chronicles from the 19th century mention several such building disasters. In the second half of the 20th century, the damage reached catastrophic proportions and saving the historic town centre become a necessity. The primary objective of the mining works was the elimination of workings and voids beneath the houses, roads and squares. Because of their historical and monumental values some of the cellars that were in a relatively good condition, were joined together to form the underground tourist route in 1977. The trail is 470m in length, and includes 34 chambers on various levels. Interesting archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions have been set up in the chambers and there even is an exhibit of the Salt Mine in Bochnia, which refers to the trade in salt, in which Sandomierz played a significant role.
