St.Peter and Paul's Church

General

Type d'unité:

This is the oldest church in Szczecin belonging to the Polish-Catholic community.

The Church was built in 1124, during the first mission of St.Otto the Bishop of Bamberg who brought Christianity to Pomerania. Built outside the town walls, first as a wooden church, it was conceived as a place of worship for the Slavonic inhabitants of suburbs. It was as late as in 1425-1440 that it became a brick construction. The reportedly rich and ornate interior decoration of the church perished completely. The brick elevation and the sacristy retained remains of late-Gothic decorations in the form of ceramic consoles adorned with masks. When the Swedish Szczecin was besieged by the Brandenburg army in 1677, the church was badly damaged. During the restoration, completed as late as in 1702, the destroyed Gothic vault was replaced by a wooden ceiling, ornamented with paintings by Philip Ernst Eichner. The 21 tombs stones inside and outside of the church, date back to the 17th and 18th centuries.
