St. Nicholas Cathedral

General

Type d'unité:

St. Nicholas Cathedral - the oldest church in Kalisz. Founded by Prince Bolesław Pobożny after 1253. In 1992 the church was raised to a dignity of a cathedral.

The oldest part of temple dates back to the second half of 13 th c. At that time the presbytery and the sacristy were erected from the Duke Bolesław Pobożny foundation, with a cross-ribbed vault preserved tot his day. The church was remodeled many times. During the fire in 1706 the church tower collapsed but it was rebuilt in 1876. The baroque main altar from 1662 was decorated with a picture from Peter Rubens workshop – “The Descent from the Cross”. This situation lasted till 1973, when a fire broke out in the church. In the Polish chapel there are stained glass windows an polychromies made in 1909 by Włodzimierz Tetmajer. Two events have a special place in the history of the church: synod of Polish bishops (1357) and raising to the status of the Kalisz Diocese cathedral (1992).
